Which Navigation System Does Your BMW 3 Series Have?

The BMW 3 Series received different factory navigation systems across E90, F30, F31, F34, G20, and G21 production. The system fitted to your vehicle depends on chassis, build date, and the navigation package ordered at the factory. The F30 is the most misidentified chassis for 3 Series orders. Three head units span a five-year window: NBT to July 2015, EVO ID4 from July 2015, EVO ID5 from mid-2016. The G20 is equally complex — same model year can have EVO ID6, MGU iDrive 7, or MGU iDrive 8 depending on trim and build date. VIN at checkout is the only reliable confirmation for both.

Which navigation system does the BMW F30 3 Series have?

F30 production used four possible systems depending on build date and spec: NBT (NEXT maps) from November 2012 to July 2015, EVO ID4 from July 2015 to approximately mid-2016, EVO ID5 from approximately mid-2016 to 2018, and EntryNav2 (WAY maps) in base specification in some markets. The iDrive version screen confirms which system is fitted. Vehicles near the transition dates require VIN confirmation at checkout before any code is generated.

What navigation does the BMW G20 3 Series have?

G20 3 Series has one of four possible factory systems. Base specification has EntryNav2 (WAY maps). Standard Live Cockpit Plus from 2019 to approximately mid-2020 has EVO ID6. Live Cockpit Professional from 2019 to 2022, and Live Cockpit Plus from mid-2020 to 2022, have MGU iDrive 7 (LIVE or JOY maps). All G20 LCI from 2022 have MGU iDrive 8 or 8.5 (JOY maps). VIN at checkout is the only reliable confirmation — the same model year can have different systems depending on trim.

Can I upgrade my F30 from NEXT maps to EVO maps?

No. A BMW navigation system accepts only the map type factory-installed in that vehicle. An F30 with NBT NEXT maps cannot install EVO maps regardless of FSC code or USB format. The map type is set in the head unit coding at the factory and cannot be changed without replacing the physical hardware.
